NS 3281
Title:  NS 3281
Description:  An NS work train and Interstate 20 both curve into one another. With the parade of trains on the rails of NS's East End from Birmingham to Atlanta and with the same yet more consistent parade of semi's along a nearly I-20 it's a game on competition wise. Who makes the grade within that is uncertain but in another term of grades, it looks as if I-20 has a stiff one here at mile marker 148 or M.P. 776.2 for NS at Brompton, AL.

NS 1625
Title:  NS 1625
Description:  NS 945 crosses over the Coosa River at Riverside, AL. The lead unit is one of only 11 high hood SD40-2 units left on the roster. At peak strength NS had over 300+ high hood 6 axle units of various makes and models. It has now dwindled down to just 10 units, all of former N&W ancestry when this image was posted 10/30/2018

In the end the UP 4336 would gain the green highball first with the SD70 spartan cab 2579 hot on his heels to clear the way for Amtrak 20 who would need them cleared for its northward journey.

NS 8794
Title:  NS 8794
Description:  NS 27A swings thru a curve at Oxford , AL with NS 8794 in the lead. These old sparty's are being renumbered and rebuilt a handful at a time. They were NS's first delves into the Dash 9 craze that swept the country but unlike other RR's NS would opt for standard cab equipped units. It was however with the arrival of NS 8889 in January 1996 that from that point onwards they would come equipped with the safety or wide cabs. Recently NS has begun a program to rebuild their first Dash 9's that were standard cabbed with safety cabs. All have since been retired since this image was taken.

NS 7221
Title:  NS 7221
Description:  In October 2017 after having shot many of the typical images at Cook Springs, AL of trains coming through the sweeping curve onto the trestle with Bald Rock Mountain for years, I decided to try the tunnel. Because shooting at the tunnel can only really be had on cloudy days, most of the purist photographers won't bother with the effort not really grasping the fact that when it's cloudy that an opportunity to shoot at some locations are made possible. Having had that purist mentality for quite some time, I put it to rest. Were it sunny, this afternoon image couldn’t be had.

Air And Light
Title:  Air And Light
Description:  NS 339 with its typical allotment of KCS power darts across a foggy Logan Martin Lake at Riverside, AL. The original intent was to have the reflection of the entire train but I had walked away for a moment while waiting and sure enough just as soon as I did so I got caught unprepared. The title of the image is that of a song by Steve Roach that I felt was befitting of the mood.

NS 2545
Title:  NS 2545
Description:  Before a large swath of storms would strike the area and wreak havoc later this day, NS 130 heads through Vance, AL under deceptively blue skies.I decided to work this local lumber mills sign in on an otherwise random image. With the temp already hitting the mid 90's and a fully running a/c, my other lenses kept fogging up internally so I had to turn to the 100x400 which gave me no problems but was a bit overkill and forced tighter shooting but it didn't slow me down none and gave me a chance to be a bit creative.

Title:  NS 2778
Description:  NS 153 swings itself through the horseshoe curve at at Lovick, AL as it towers over a long abandoned bridge and kudzu still hanging on into early October. Wasn’t the easiest shot to take and one slip and down into a ravine I’d go but luckily I pulled it off without a rollin’ and’a tumblin’.

Cook Springs is a few minutes drive east of Birmingham on Norfolk Southern’s East End District between Birmingham and Atlanta, GA.

BNSF 8987
Title:  BNSF 8987
Description:  The DPU’s of NS 739 aren’t doing much at this point but hanging out as the coal from the train has been emptied. Their work may be sporadic at best but one can be assured when it was loaded that they were earning their keep. The 8987 deserves a rest and easy run as it was all but destroyed in a derailment on 6/29/2007 from a wash out near Francis, Oklahoma. You couldn’t tell it now as its prime movers deep throated engine ebbs and flows off the flanks of Bald Rock Mountain at Cook Springs, AL.

NS 7025
Title:  NS 7025
Description:  As typical of this time of year, NS performs is annual track work blitz among many districts and subdivisions and Alabama of course is no exception. A listen to the scanner brings or chat with someone at NS or just general hubbub in groups tend to rear out odd train numbers. Many gasp and clutch their pearls as they scramble to the tracks to see these mystery double digit, lettered ending trains. After all, the rice crispies tell us that since its an odd train it most certainly will have odd power. Where that may had been true some years before that is not the case today. However a few years ago these lowly work trains tended to be squanderers of equally lowly power. Old high hoods of SOU and NW lineage, the long in the tooth SD50's and SD60's, senile PR43C's that seemed to do everything you didn't ask them to do, those 5500 series that were bastardized from old high hoods and even beyond in their years C39-8's. The moral of the story seemed to be "That old gray mare, she ain't what she used to be" is what lead. There wasn't much rolling the dice in the motive department when considering what units to assign these trains. Rolling of the dice would have been an honor, by the looks of things it appeared they were bowling for food stamps. Time marches on though. With all the aforementioned units serving currently as razor blades, yard slugs, working for others or stored, others must fill those shoes. While there may be no documentation photographically that NS 6619 ever lead a work train, after a face lift and rebuilding she certainly most would. The February 1986 built 6619 was stricken from the NS roster in 2015 and after a stroll through the Juniata forest, she emerged in 2016 as SD60E 7025 and placed into service 3/12/2016. This January morning finds NS 7025 leading an NS work train as it snortingly barrels through Leeds, AL. Despite my lack of enthusiasm of the ubiquitous leader and ponderance for the ghost of what once was, the engineer made quite the show with the '25 lugging that work train through the little town at full track speed with horns blaring and the prime mover rumbling. Though what once was no longer looked the same, the actions of what is made me a kid again if even for a moment

NS 8104
Title:  NS 8104
Description:  NS 154 swings around the curve at Lovick at a location I hadn’t shot at before. Shooting was a chore as there was limited room and one slip promised a rough ride down a 30’ gorge. So I don’t think I’ll be back. Would be a nice drone shot though.
