NS A23 heads for Norris Yard with probably rare as could be power up front. NS only had 20 SD50's of their own and upon getting their share of Conrail, they inherited 78 more. So roughly 10 years ago just shy of 100 of these were roaming the Norfolk Southern systems rails. But in todays world only 10 are left on the active roster and all 10 are of Conrail heritage. At the time this image was taken, there were only 13 units roaming the rails in their former Conrail paint. So 1 out of 10 and 1 out of 13 isn't too bad. The remaining SD50's on NS are slated to be retired by the years end and sometime there after they will be rebuilt into SD40E's. For now though its not much, time is still on 5443's time. |

| Description: |
When NS started back to running into Columbus it was at an important time. It was just before the retirement of C39's, the new Thoroughbred or unibrow scheme hadn't came into play, GP50's were still roaming the system with their high hoods intact and SD50's could still be found. The 6522 is living on borrowed time though. Sometime later in the year most NS SD50's would find their way to the deadlines. Most would go on to NREX. |
