One of my perverse pleasures in this hobby is pacing alongside a train at speed. Watching the lead locomotives bounce and sway with prime movers burbling, dynamics and traction motors whining with bearing caps on dancing trucks spinning like mad. In this view here at Phillip, MS, the road and rail dove tail one another before coming in for close paralleling and ahead lies nothing less than 10 miles of mostly unobstructed chasing in hand to hand combat with one another. No stop signs, to red lights, no speed traps or school buses. Just the sweet music of GE’s and EMD’s doing their dance as the engineer lets the ladies stretch their legs. It’s literal romance. A dance not to be missed. In this view I draw in on CN Q-194’s flank as it heads south down CN’s Yazoo Sun while I close in alongside MS County Rd 518. Ahead are smooth 60mph running for the CN crew while I’ll be bounced along in my seat on the 518 but so worth it again to experience. |

A CN SD70M-2 is a rarity around here and I was lucky enough to photograph one on the NS at 10:34am on a crystal clear spring day. I wanted to go further with it but I was up past my bed time. I was working night shift at my job at US Steel and had to be back to work on duty at 10pm the same night so again USSR taketh away. But glad I got what I got. |

CN 8873 leads a northbound freight through Glendora, MS. Glendora is noteworthy but unfortunately for sad reasons. Only a couple minutes walk from this location is where Emmett Till was murdered in August 1955. What was even worse was that those who had his blood on their hands were acquitted by a jury and later confessed to having indeed taken the young Chicago boys life. |

The SD70M-2’s last stand on a class 1. CN and NS were the only class 1 takers of the model however NS retired and disposed of theirs recently. So CN is the last hold out and one of which is seen here on the point of an oil train strung across the expansive wooden trestle over the Black Warrior River in Tuscaloosa waiting its chance to enter Watco’s Alabama Southern yard before being routed to Hunt Oil in Tuscaloosa. |
